Overview
SL Green established Food1st, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the objective of alleviating the ongoing food shortage in New York City that has been further exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. SL Green is seeking support from its tenants, neighbors, and friends in providing support for this much needed initiative.
Challenge
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, food pantries throughout New York City have declared a state of Emergency. Demand for food assistance has more than doubled and there is a severe shortage of meals for both first responders and vulnerable populations throughout the city. Simultaneously, New York City’s restaurants are struggling with significant operational restrictions that have put the livelihoods of thousands of New Yorkers at risk. Food1st is joining the solution.
Mission
Help feed emergency service workers and our neighbors who have limited access to food by partnering with restaurants throughout New York City in a way that will also revitalize the City’s food and beverage industry.
Solution
We will provide food solutions for New York City and progressively put restaurant staff back to work in coordination with organizations including Citymeals on Wheels and Queens Feeds.
- We’ve partnered with Chef Daniel Boulud to fire up his downtown prep kitchen and cook thousands of meals a day for nurses and first responders supporting the heath crisis in New York City
- In order to expand the program to feed elderly New Yorkers and food-insecure families, as well as help New York City restaurants reopen their kitchens, we are partnering with food service tenants across New York City to prepare and donate prepackaged meals.
